Qingming Festival Sparks Travel Boom in the Chinese Mainland

The Chinese mainland witnessed a remarkable surge in travel activities during the 2025 Qingming Festival holiday. Driven by pent-up demand and a renewed interest in traditional culture and spring tourism, travelers from all walks of life took to the roads and rails in record numbers.

Official estimates indicate that expressways averaged around 59 million vehicles daily, reflecting a 1.1 percent increase over the previous year. Notably, new energy vehicles accounted for about 18 percent of this traffic, highlighting the growing appeal of eco-friendly travel options.

Rail travel also experienced a significant boost. On one Sunday alone, the national railway network was expected to handle 20 million passenger trips, with an additional 1,214 trains scheduled to meet the holiday demand. This surge underscores the evolving landscape of transportation, where sustainability and efficiency go hand in hand.

The Qingming Festival not only provided a much-needed break from routine but also showcased the dynamic intersection of cultural heritage and modern, sustainable travel practices in the Chinese mainland.
