South Korea Launches Visa-Free Entry for Chinese Group Tourists

South Korea is set to welcome Chinese group tourists with a new temporary visa waiver policy that aims to jumpstart its tourism sector. As domestic demand remains subdued, the measure will simplify entry for group travelers from the Chinese mainland, promising a boost in tourist numbers.

Acting president Choi Sang-mok announced that, starting in the third quarter, the visa exemption will accelerate the recovery of visitors while attracting elderly, family groups, and travelers from emerging markets in third- and fourth-tier cities. Analysts expect the streamlined process to positively impact South Korea's retail, duty-free, and catering industries, enhancing cultural and economic exchanges.

Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Mao Ning emphasized that strengthening cultural ties between the two neighbors benefits both sides. Supporting this initiative, research from a leading online travel agency indicates that travel bookings by Chinese mainland tourists to South Korea have increased nearly 20% year-on-year, with these visitors accounting for 28% of international arrivals last year.

This visa-free policy comes in tandem with broader regional efforts to ease travel restrictions, following China’s extension of similar privileges for nationals from several Asian and European regions. With the upcoming APEC forum in Gyeongju—a city renowned for its rich heritage—South Korea is poised to offer travelers an immersive cultural experience, paving the way for further people-to-people ties and sustainable tourism.
