Morocco is making a significant leap in the green energy sector by partnering with Chinese companies on ambitious green hydrogen projects valued at 319 billion Moroccan dirhams (approximately $32.7 billion). This collaboration marks a pivotal moment in the ongoing green cooperation between Morocco and China.
Last week, the Moroccan government approved six major projects to be developed across three southern provinces, each spanning up to 30,000 hectares. These projects aim to produce ammonia, steel, and industrial fuel, aligning with Morocco's broader strategy for a green energy transition. This initiative is a cornerstone of the "Morocco Offer," launched last year to position the country as a global leader in green hydrogen and attract both national and international investors to foster large-scale renewable energy developments.
Among the five consortiums selected for these projects, UEG and China Three Gorges, representing the Chinese consortium, will focus on ammonia production. The other consortiums include partners from Spain, Saudi Arabia, the United States, Germany, and Morocco, highlighting the international scope of this investment.
This partnership builds on a series of high-profile collaborations between China and Morocco. Earlier this year, the two nations established a joint green energy laboratory to accelerate research and innovation in renewable technologies. Additionally, Guoxuan High-tech announced plans to build Africa's first electric vehicle battery mega factory in Morocco, further cementing the strong ties between the two countries.
Morocco's strategic location serves as a crucial bridge in the Middle East and North Africa (MENA) market, enabling Chinese companies to seamlessly connect with both European and African markets. According to the Arab-China Institute for Economics and Policy, Morocco's approach of combining low-cost production with high value-added exports aligns perfectly with the Belt and Road Initiative, creating a win-win scenario for both nations.
As these projects move forward, they are expected to drive sustainable development within Morocco and enhance the global standing of Chinese renewable energy technologies. This partnership not only supports Morocco's green energy ambitions but also contributes to the broader global effort towards sustainable and clean energy solutions.
