China’s Railway Passenger Trips Soar to Record 726 Million in Early 2025

China's railway passenger trips reached a new milestone, skyrocketing to 726 million in the first two months of 2025. This 4.7% year-on-year increase marks an all-time high for the country's rail network.

The annual Spring Festival travel rush played a pivotal role in this surge, as millions across regions moved to visit family and explore new destinations. The convergence of students, workers, and tourists traveling simultaneously contributed to the remarkable rise in passenger volume.

To accommodate the booming demand, China's railway operator ramped up services, operating an average of 11,605 passenger trains daily—an 8.7% increase from the previous year.

Enhancements in railway services have also played a significant part in this growth. With convenient transfers available at 120 stations nationwide and internet-based food-ordering services at 89 stations, travelers are enjoying a more seamless journey experience.

On the international front, outbound passenger trips saw substantial growth as well. The China-Laos Railway transported 59,000 cross-border passengers in January and February, up by 57.9% from last year. Additionally, stable operations of China-Mongolia and China-Russia international trains have facilitated cross-border exchanges and boosted tourism consumption.
