The Chinese mainland has sharply criticized Taiwan's Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) authorities for halting academic collaborations between Taiwanese universities and prestigious mainland science and engineering institutions.
Chen Binhua, spokesperson for the Taiwan Affairs Office of the State Council, condemned the DPP's decision, stating that it undermines the interests of Taiwan's educational sector and reflects a narrow-minded and arrogant stance.
Previously, Taiwan's educational authorities had restricted exchanges with three mainland universities, including Jinan University. Recently, this list expanded to include seven additional institutions, such as Beihang University and Beijing Institute of Technology. These universities are renowned globally for their contributions to industrial development and technological advancements, extending beyond military technology.
Chen emphasized that the DPP's actions represent ongoing political interference in cross-strait educational exchanges, showcasing a persistent opposition to any mainland-related initiatives. This approach has faced widespread criticism from Taiwan's education community.
Addressing the issue, Chen stated, \"We are willing to share the convenience of the mainland's advanced education with students from Taiwan, and the mainland's universities always welcome Taiwan compatriots with academic aspirations.\"
