China Calls for US Withdrawal of Copper Import Probe

China's Ministry of Commerce has formally requested the United States to withdraw its Section 232 investigation into copper imports. The ministry argues that the US probe, which alleges that China uses subsidies and excess capacity to unfairly undermine competition, is entirely unfounded.

He Yadong, spokesperson for the ministry, addressed the issue during a press conference. He described the US investigation as a unilateral and protectionist act disguised under the guise of 'national security.' According to He, such actions not only violate the principles of a rules-based multilateral trading system but also disrupt the stability of global production and supply chains.

Highlighting the stance of the World Trade Organization (WTO), He referenced a 2022 experts panel ruling that determined the US Section 232 tariff measures to be in violation of WTO rules. He emphasized that China is a net importer of refined copper, exporting only a minimal amount of copper products.

He warned that if the United States persists in imposing additional tariffs and restrictive measures, China will take necessary actions to protect its legitimate rights and interests. Despite the tensions, the spokesperson expressed China's willingness to resolve the dispute through dialogue and consultation, firmly opposing unilateral tariff measures by the US.
