The Chinese mainland saw a record-breaking 9.02 billion inter-regional passenger trips during the 40-day Spring Festival travel rush, known locally as Chunyun, official data revealed on Sunday.
This figure represents a 7.1-percent increase compared to the same period in 2024, according to a special work team established to ensure smooth operations during Chunyun, which concluded on Saturday.
Chunyun, often dubbed the world's largest annual human migration, underscores the Chinese mainland's substantial mobility and economic dynamism. With a steadily recovering economy and a growing appetite for travel, this year's Chunyun saw the transportation network managing unprecedented passenger volumes.
Road traffic dominated the travel surge, accounting for approximately 8.39 billion trips—a 7.2-percent year-on-year increase.
Railway passenger numbers also soared, reaching 513 million and expanding by 6.1 percent year-on-year, setting a new record, as reported by the China State Railway Group Co., Ltd.
The Civil Aviation Administration of China noted that the civil aviation sector handled 90.2 million passenger trips and conducted 739,000 flights during the same period, both achieving historical highs.
The Spring Festival, a time for family reunions, occurred on January 29 this year.
