Myanmar and China are stepping up joint efforts to combat telecom fraud, online gambling, and human trafficking, signaling a major regional push against cross-border crime. The two nations held high-level talks this month, with Myanmar detailing plans for “severely cracking down” on illegal online activities that threaten regional security.
Building a United Front
Chinese Ambassador Ma Jia and Assistant Public Security Minister Liu Zhongyi met with Myanmar's Deputy Prime Minister U Than Swe and Home Affairs Minister Lt-Gen Tun Tun Naung on February 14. The discussions focused on creating a “regular cooperation mechanism” to address tech-enabled crimes impacting both countries.
New Measures Unveiled
Myanmar authorities pledged stronger coordination with China and neighboring states like Thailand to dismantle criminal networks. Plans include stricter enforcement, data sharing, and cross-border investigations targeting fraud operations exploiting digital platforms.
Protecting Citizens, Stabilizing Relations
China praised Myanmar’s commitment to safeguarding Chinese nationals, calling telecom fraud a “tumor” threatening lives and regional cooperation. Both sides emphasized “addressing root causes” through legal reforms and public awareness campaigns.
