Trump Proposes Immediate Shutdown of U.S. Education Department

Former U.S. President Donald Trump has announced his intention to close the Education Department immediately, labeling it a 'big con job.' Speaking from the White House Oval Office, Trump emphasized the department's low global ranking and high spending.

\"I'd like it to be closed immediately,\" Trump stated. \"The Department of Education's a big con job.\"

He highlighted that the United States ranks 40th among the top 40 countries in education but spends more per pupil than any other nation, achieving the top rank only in cost per pupil.

Trump's proposal aims to return education responsibilities to the states, aligning with his broader agenda to reduce the size and functions of the federal government. During his first term, he proposed shutting down the department, emphasizing significant federal workforce reductions.

The Department of Education currently employs 4,245 people and allocated $251 billion in the most recent fiscal year, according to Reuters. An immediate closure could disrupt billions in aid for students from kindergarten through high school and affect tuition assistance for college students.

In addition to the Education Department, Trump has attempted to shut down other agencies, such as the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID), citing fraud and corruption. However, the closure of both the Education Department and USAID would require approval from Congress.
