Record-Breaking Spring Festival Drives Tourism and Spending in the Chinese Mainland

The 2025 Spring Festival holiday, spanning from January 28 to February 4, witnessed an unprecedented boom in tourism and consumer spending across the Chinese mainland.

Data from the Ministry of Culture and Tourism revealed that a staggering 501 million domestic trips were undertaken during the eight-day holiday, marking a 5.9 percent increase compared to the previous year. This surge in travel activity not only highlights the enduring allure of traditional festivals but also underscores the resilience of the domestic tourism sector.

Total domestic spending reached an impressive 677 billion yuan ($93 billion), reflecting a 7 percent year-on-year growth. This spending boost is attributed to increased travel expenditures, festive celebrations, and heightened consumer confidence.

The Spring Festival continues to be a pivotal period for economic activity, driving significant growth in both the tourism and retail sectors. As the Chinese mainland moves forward, these trends indicate strong prospects for sustained economic vitality in the coming years.
