Steady Growth in the Chinese Mainland’s Foreign Investments in 2024

The Chinese mainland's foreign investment and cooperation remained robust in 2024, as stated by an official from the Ministry of Commerce (MOC) on Sunday.

Non-financial outbound direct investment from the Chinese mainland increased by 10.5 percent year on year, reaching $143.85 billion last year. Investments in the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) countries saw a significant rise of 12.6 percent year on year, highlighting strengthened economic ties within the region.

The MOC data reveals that sectors such as leasing, business services, manufacturing, and wholesale and retail were key drivers of this investment growth. Additionally, the turnover of the Chinese mainland's foreign contracted projects totaled $165.97 billion in 2024, marking a 3.1 percent increase year on year.

In terms of workforce expansion abroad, the number of workers dispatched overseas reached 409,000, a 17.9 percent increase from the previous year. By the end of 2024, there were a total of 594,000 Chinese mainland workers employed internationally.

Investment along the Belt and Road initiative also saw positive trends, with non-financial investments in participating countries and regions growing by 5.4 percent year on year to $33.69 billion last year. This growth underscores the Chinese mainland's commitment to fostering global economic integration and cooperation.
