China’s Railways to Handle 11.5 Million Trips on New Year’s Day

China’s railway network is gearing up for an unprecedented travel surge, with an estimated 11.5 million passenger trips expected on New Year’s Day, according to the China State Railway Group Co., Ltd. This massive influx is part of the annual chunyun, the Spring Festival travel rush, which is the busiest transportation period in China.

To accommodate the high demand, the railway sector has deployed an additional 342 trains, bringing the total number of trains operating across the network to 10,427 on Wednesday. These measures include adding more trains on the busiest routes, reinforcing safety protocols, and enhancing passenger services to ensure a smooth and efficient travel experience.

The Spring Festival, falling on January 29 this year, is China's biggest traditional holiday, during which millions of people travel to reunite with their families. The chunyun period spans from January 14 to February 22, reflecting the extensive planning and coordination required to manage the transportation needs of such a vast population.

Train tickets for the travel rush went on sale on Tuesday, with many eagerly securing their seats for the journey. The robust railway infrastructure and proactive measures by the China State Railway Group highlight the country’s commitment to facilitating one of the world’s largest human migrations each year.
