China's movie industry had a blockbuster year in 2024, raking in a staggering 42.5 billion yuan (approximately $5.91 billion) in box office revenue, according to the China Film Administration announced on Wednesday.
Domestic films were the star performers, contributing over 33.4 billion yuan and accounting for nearly 79% of the total revenue. Out of 79 movies that grossed more than 100 million yuan each, 55 were homegrown productions, highlighting the robust strength of China's local film market.
The cinematic landscape expanded significantly in 2024, with more than 4,600 new cinema screens added across cities, bringing the nationwide total to 90,968. This growth in infrastructure supported the surge in moviegoers, as urban cinemas collectively recorded over 1 billion visits last year.
This impressive performance underscores China's position as a major player in the global film industry and sets the stage for continued growth and innovation in the years to come.
