Guangdong Province, a key economic hub in the Chinese mainland, has successfully handled a record-breaking 600 million high-speed railway passenger trips in 2024, as announced by the Guangzhou Railway Group on Saturday.
A significant portion of these trips, over 27 million, were between Guangdong and the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region via the Guangzhou-Shenzhen-Hong Kong high-speed railway. This marks a remarkable 37 percent increase compared to the previous year.
The expansion of train routes connecting cities within the Chinese mainland and Hong Kong has made high-speed rail an increasingly popular choice for tourism, business travel, and visits to relatives. This surge in passenger numbers underscores the growing integration and connectivity within the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area.
Zhang Zhe, director of the passenger transport department of the railway group, commented that the substantial passenger flow is a testament to the continuous progress and development of the Greater Bay Area, fostering closer ties and greater mobility among its residents.
