Tesla is accelerating its push into sustainable energy with the upcoming completion of its energy storage megafactory in Shanghai by the end of this year. This state-of-the-art facility, which began construction in late May, marks Tesla's first megafactory outside the United States and its second plant in Shanghai, following the gigafactory's inauguration in 2019.
Covering an expansive 200,000 square meters, the megafactory represents a substantial investment of approximately 1.45 billion yuan (about $199 million). According to the administration of the Lin-gang Special Area of China (Shanghai) Pilot Free Trade Zone, the factory will focus on manufacturing Tesla's renowned Megapack energy-storage batteries.
Mass production is slated to commence in the first quarter of 2025, with an initial output of 10,000 units annually, equating to around 40 GWh of energy storage. This significant capacity will bolster Tesla's efforts in providing sustainable energy solutions on a global scale.
The Shanghai megafactory underscores Tesla's commitment to expanding its manufacturing footprint in key international markets, leveraging advanced technology and innovation to meet the growing demand for renewable energy products. As the world increasingly shifts towards sustainable energy, Tesla's new facility is poised to play a pivotal role in driving this transformation.
