China’s SMEs Drive Innovation with Surge in Patent Development, Reports CNIPA

China's small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) are at the forefront of patent innovation, thanks to the increasing industrialization of patents, according to the China National Intellectual Property Administration (CNIPA).

As of November, enterprises held 73.5% of valid domestic invention patents, with a significant portion owned by SMEs, CNIPA spokesperson Liang Xinxin stated at a press conference.

In 2024, 75.3% of valid invention patents held by SMEs in China are related to independently developed inventions, marking a 3.9 percentage point increase from the previous year. Additionally, the industrialization rate of these patents has reached 55.1%, a rise of 3.6 percentage points, Liang noted.

Senior CNIPA official Wang Peizhang highlighted that collaboration with central and local government departments is promoting innovation and technological integration among SMEs, universities, and research institutions. This initiative aims to accelerate the growth of SMEs through the commercialization of patents.
