In a strong response, the Chinese Ministry of Commerce expressed firm opposition to the United States' initiation of a Section 301 investigation targeting China's semiconductor industry policies. Labeling the move as unilateral and protectionist, China argues that the probe is set to disrupt and distort global semiconductor supply chains, ultimately harming U.S. businesses and consumers.
The Ministry highlighted that while the U.S. has invested heavily in its chip sector through initiatives like the CHIPS and Science Act, resulting in American semiconductor companies holding approximately 50% of the global market share, the impact on China is minimal. Chinese-made chips account for a mere 1.3% of the U.S. market, with exports significantly lagging behind imports from the United States, according to a recent report from the U.S. Department of Commerce.
Emphasizing the need for respect towards facts and multilateral rules, China has called on the United States to cease what it terms as erroneous practices immediately. The Ministry also assured that China will closely monitor the investigation’s progress and is prepared to take all necessary measures to defend its rights and interests resolutely.
