China and Indian Ocean Nations Boost Blue Economy Collaboration

China and Indian Ocean countries are set to deepen their cooperation in the blue economy, aiming to address shared challenges and seize new opportunities for sustainable marine development. This commitment was highlighted during the conclusion of the third China-Indian Ocean Region Forum on Blue Economy Development Cooperation in Kunming, Yunnan Province.

The three-day forum, hosted by the China International Development Cooperation Agency (CIDCA), attracted over 300 participants, including government officials, industry experts, business leaders, and representatives from international organizations. Discussions centered on critical marine issues such as fisheries management, regional connectivity, disaster prevention, climate change governance, marine energy, and ecological protection.

Luo Zhaohui, chairman of CIDCA, emphasized the importance of collaborative efforts in his opening remarks. \"We are willing to work with all parties to continue mobilizing resources, implementing the Global Development Initiative and the Antigua and Barbuda Agenda in an integrated manner, and fully supporting small island nations in achieving more resilient and lasting prosperity,\" he stated.

Ambassador Maoulana Charif of the Union of Comoros to China remarked on the strong ties between China and his country. \"Comoros and China share excellent cooperation. In 2022, we signed a memorandum of understanding on the blue economy. This forum provides a great opportunity to implement the agreement and jointly explore maritime resources,\" he told CGTN.

The enhanced collaboration aims to foster sustainable economic growth, improve maritime infrastructure, and promote environmental stewardship across the Indian Ocean region. By leveraging collective expertise and resources, China and its partners are positioned to drive significant advancements in blue economy initiatives, benefiting coastal communities and contributing to global sustainability goals.
