China to Challenge EU’s Anti-Subsidy Measures on Electric Vehicles at WTO

In a significant move for the global electric vehicle (EV) industry, China has announced its intention to file a complaint with the World Trade Organization (WTO) against the European Union's latest anti-subsidy measures targeting Chinese EV manufacturers.

A spokesperson from the Ministry of Commerce revealed on Monday that this legal action aims to safeguard the development interests of China's burgeoning EV sector while fostering global cooperation on green transformation initiatives.

China's decision follows its earlier appeal to the WTO regarding the EU's initial anti-subsidy measures. The spokesperson expressed disappointment that the EU proceeded to impose high countervailing duties on Chinese electric vehicles despite objections from EU member state governments, industry stakeholders, and the public.

The spokesperson firmly criticized the EU's actions, stating that the measures lack both factual and legal foundations, violate WTO regulations, and constitute an abuse of trade remedy provisions under the pretense of countervailing actions. This, they argue, amounts to blatant trade protectionism.

China is urging the European Union to recognize and rectify these unlawful practices promptly. The Ministry of Commerce emphasized the importance of collaborative efforts to maintain the stability of the global EV industry and supply chain, as well as to preserve the broader economic and trade relations between China and the EU.
