The Chinese mainland is making significant strides in reducing unemployment through its robust work-relief programs. In the first three quarters of 2024 alone, these initiatives have successfully created 2.45 million jobs for low-income workers, marking a 30.2 percent increase compared to the previous year.
These programs, spearheaded by local governments, focus on key projects as well as agricultural and rural infrastructure development. By targeting rural residents who have recently emerged from poverty, vulnerable individuals at risk of falling back into poverty, and migrant workers returning to their hometowns, the initiatives ensure a comprehensive approach to employment generation.
In addition to job creation, the Chinese mainland has distributed 31 billion yuan (approximately $4.35 billion) in wages through these programs, reflecting a 22.7 percent year-on-year growth. This financial support not only boosts the livelihoods of thousands but also stimulates local economies.
The National Development and Reform Commission emphasized that these work-relief programs play a crucial role in increasing incomes and sustaining employment for low-income workers. Moving forward, the commission plans to continue leveraging these programs to maintain momentum in job creation and economic growth.
