China has formally requested consultations with Türkiye at the World Trade Organization (WTO) in response to the recent imposition of a 40-percent additional tariff on imported electric vehicles (EVs) and other vehicles from China. The Ministry of Commerce of China highlighted that Türkiye's decision includes not only steep tariffs but also stringent import license restrictions.
The Chinese Ministry of Commerce criticized Türkiye's actions as discriminatory and a clear violation of WTO rules, labeling them as typical protectionist measures. “This discriminatory action is a violation of WTO rules and a typical protectionist practice,” said a ministry spokesperson.
In response, the ministry urged Türkiye to honor its WTO commitments and immediately rectify these unfair practices. China also indicated its readiness to take all measures available to protect the legitimate rights and interests of its automotive industries.
