China Initiates 15-Year Plan to Raise Retirement Age and Boost Workforce

China is set to implement a 15-year plan starting in 2025 to gradually raise the statutory retirement age. This move aims to better utilize human resources and address the declining working-age population.

The decision comes as the average life expectancy in China has risen significantly from 35 years in 1949 to 78.6 years in 2023. Additionally, the average years of education for the newly-added workforce have increased from eight years in 1982 to 14 years in 2023, leading to a later start in people's careers.

Under the new plan, the retirement age for men will increase from 60 to 63, women cadres from 55 to 58, and women blue-collar workers from 50 to 55 over the next 15 years. These changes are expected to ease the decline in the working-age population and enhance the effective use of human resources across the nation.
