China Disappointed as EU Rejects EV Tariff Avoidance Proposals

China has voiced its disappointment following the European Union's decision to reject price offers from the China Chamber of Commerce for Import and Export of Machinery and Electronic Products (CCCME) and Chinese electric vehicle (EV) producers. The Chinese Commerce Ministry announced this stance on Friday.

The European Commission, currently conducting an anti-subsidy investigation into Chinese-built EVs, informed Chinese EV manufacturers on Thursday that it had received their proposals to set minimum import prices into the EU to circumvent tariffs. However, all these proposals were subsequently rejected.

A spokesperson from China's Commerce Ministry criticized the European Commission for making the decision without in-depth communication, stating that it disregarded the sincerity and efforts of the Chinese EV industry. The spokesperson highlighted that since June 22, working teams from both China and the EU have engaged in over ten rounds of consultations aimed at resolving the anti-subsidy investigation through dialogue and cooperation.

\"The European Commission's rejection of the relevant proposal without detailed assessment not only undermines the confidence of the Chinese industry to continue cooperation, but also does not meet the expectations of EU member states, let alone its public statement that it hopes to resolve the case through dialogue,\" the spokesperson said. They added that China will closely monitor developments on the EU side and take necessary measures to protect the legitimate rights and interests of Chinese companies.
