China Strikes Back: Investigating Canada’s New Tariffs on EVs and More

In a significant move, China has announced it will launch anti-discrimination and anti-dumping investigations in response to Canada's recent tariff hikes. The Chinese Ministry of Commerce revealed on Tuesday that the probes will target Canada's new 100-percent tariff on Chinese-made electric vehicles (EVs), as well as a 25-percent duty on Chinese steel and aluminum imports.

Canada's decision follows similar actions by the United States and the European Union, aiming to protect their domestic industries. However, China's spokesperson criticized the tariffs as discriminatory and unilateral, expressing strong dissatisfaction and opposition.

\"Despite opposition and dissuasion from various parties, Canada has imposed discriminatory unilateral restrictions on imports from China. China is strongly dissatisfied and firmly opposed to this and plans to bring Canada's actions to the WTO dispute resolution mechanism,\" the spokesperson stated.

Additionally, China highlighted concerns over Canada's rapeseed exports, which surged by 170-percent in quantity to $3.47 billion in 2023, accompanied by declining prices that suggest possible dumping. This increase has reportedly caused significant losses for related domestic industries in China.

The Chinese mainland emphasized that these investigations are in line with both domestic laws and WTO regulations, signaling a robust response to what it deems unfair trade practices by Canada. As tensions rise, the global community watches closely, anticipating further developments in this trade dispute.
