FOCAC 9 Summit: Boosting South-South Cooperation in the 21st Century

The ninth edition of the Forum on China-Africa Cooperation (FOCAC) is set to take place in Beijing from September 4 to 6, marking a significant milestone in South-South Cooperation (SSC) for the 21st century.

Since its inception in October 2000, FOCAC has played a pivotal role in fostering economic development and strengthening ties between China and African nations. The summit alternates between Beijing and major African cities, reflecting its commitment to maintaining momentum in government-initiated cooperation.

Over the past quarter-century, the dynamics of global interactions have shifted. Traditional North-South dialogues have given way to a renewed focus on SSC, emphasizing collaboration among developing countries. This paradigm shift is evident in the objectives of FOCAC 9, which seeks to enhance economic security and promote sustainable growth across participating nations.

Professor Zha Daojiong from Peking University highlights that SSC today is about \"cooperation by the South and for the South,\" a principle that has evolved from its political and diplomatic roots in the 1950s. The resurgence of SSC is further supported by institutions like the United Nations Office for South-South Cooperation, established in 2013, which underscores the global recognition of SSC's importance.

FOCAC 9 serves as a testament to the enduring value of SSC, offering a platform for dialogue and collaboration that addresses contemporary development challenges. As nations navigate the complexities of the global economy, FOCAC continues to be a cornerstone for fostering mutual growth and shared prosperity.
