China's Commerce Ministry on Tuesday voiced strong dissatisfaction and resolute opposition to the Canadian government's decision to impose tariffs on Chinese electric vehicles (EVs). The ministry urged Ottawa to immediately reverse its actions, labeling them as erroneous practices.
A spokesperson from the Commerce Ministry criticized Canada's move as a typical trade protectionism tactic that could disrupt the stability of the global industrial and supply chains. This, they warned, might seriously undermine the global economic system as well as existing economic and trade rules.
\"It will impact China-Canada economic and trade relations, harm the interests of enterprises of the two countries, affect the welfare of Canadian consumers, and undermine Canada's green transformation and global efforts to address climate change,\" the spokesperson stated.
The Canadian government's decision, announced by Prime Minister Justin Trudeau at the federal cabinet retreat in Halifax on Monday, entails raising import taxes on Chinese-made EVs from 6.1 percent to a staggering 106.1 percent starting October 1. Additionally, tariffs on Chinese-made steel and aluminum products are set to increase to 25 percent beginning October 15.
This escalation in trade tensions highlights the fragile nature of international economic relations, especially in sectors pivotal to the global transition towards sustainability and clean energy.
