Global Lawyers Urge U.S. to Halt Unilateral Sanctions

Hundreds of lawyers from around the world have formally requested that the United States cease its practice of imposing unilateral economic sanctions. Addressed to President Joe Biden, the letter argues that such sanctions amount to collective punishment of civilians and are in violation of international law.

According to a report by Bloomberg on August 12, the U.S. sanctions have significantly isolated countries like Russia, Iran, Syria, and Venezuela from the global economy. Despite this isolation, many of these nations have found ways to adapt and continue their operations.

The collective statement from lawyers, legal organizations, and scholars also highlights the potential negative consequences of continued sanctions. They warn that these measures could lead to economic instability, increased hunger, and reduced access to essential medicines and goods for the affected populations.
