Rural tourism is undergoing a renaissance, driven by innovative professionals known as homestay managers. These individuals are not only providing accommodation but also breathing new life into countryside communities, blending tradition with modernity.
One such manager is Liu Huimin, who chose to move to Siduhe Village in Huairou, Beijing, straight out of university. As the homestay manager for the entire village, Liu has transformed the traditional role of hospitality into a multifaceted position that encompasses cultural promotion and community engagement.
\"In the traditional perception, people just take it for granted that homestay managers play the role of waiters, responsible for tourist receiving and the room services, like washing the dishes or cleaning rooms,\" Liu explained to China Media Group (CMG). \"However, with the market expansion and the standardization of the industry, a qualified homestay manager is expected to have a firm grasp or a high degree of competence in many fields,\" she added.
Internationalizing Rural Tourism
Liu's approach goes beyond basic services. She introduced an eye-catching culture journey map in front of each homestay, complete with text describing the house's unique features and a QR code for booking information. This innovative method enhances the visitor experience and streamlines the booking process.
Moreover, Liu took charge of the village's social media presence, creating engaging content through storytelling, video shoots, and live broadcasts. Her efforts have significantly boosted the village's visibility, attracting more tourists and providing tangible benefits to local residents.
\"Nowadays, the role of a homestay manager is not just to provide accommodation-related services but also to become a disseminator of local culture and a lifestyle guide,\" Liu noted. Her work exemplifies how rural tourism can be a catalyst for sustainable development, fostering economic growth while preserving cultural heritage.
As rural areas continue to attract visitors seeking authentic experiences, homestay managers like Liu are essential in shaping the future of rural tourism, ensuring that modernization and tradition coexist harmoniously.
