China Sees 130% Surge in Foreign Visitors, Boosting Economy

China has experienced a remarkable 129.9 percent growth in foreign visitors, reaching 17.25 million in the first seven months of this year. This significant increase is attributed to a series of measures implemented to facilitate the entry of international travelers, according to the National Immigration Administration (NIA).

Liu Haitao, NIA deputy head, highlighted at a press conference that the influx of foreign visitors has generated over 100 billion yuan (approximately $14 billion) in consumption. The average daily spending per visitor reached nearly 3,500 yuan, underscoring the positive economic impact of tourism.

The issuance of port visas to foreign nationals surged by 183 percent year on year, with 846,000 visas granted to those needing urgent entry into China without sufficient time to apply through embassies or consulates. The NIA emphasized that foreign nationals can submit port visa applications in advance or apply upon arrival, making the process more accessible and efficient.

From January to July, China recorded a total of 341 million cross-border trips, marking a 62.34 percent increase compared to the same period last year. This growth is partly driven by the 72-/144-hour visa-free transit policy, which the NIA noted plays a crucial role in fostering high-level opening up, enhancing people-to-people exchanges, and promoting international cooperation.

The NIA pledged to continue improving and optimizing visa policies to maintain China’s welcoming stance towards foreign visitors. These efforts reflect China’s commitment to creating a more open and inviting environment for international travelers.
