America's national debt has surpassed $35 trillion for the first time, according to data released by the U.S. Treasury Department on Monday afternoon.
The gross national debt reached an unprecedented $35,001,278,179,208.67, marking a significant increase from previous milestones: $34 trillion in early January 2024 and $33 trillion in September 2023.
Maya MacGuineas, president of the nonpartisan Committee for a Responsible Federal Budget, emphasized the urgency of addressing the debt, stating, \"We are going to have to get serious about the debt, and soon. Election years cannot be an exception for trying to prevent completely foreseeable dangers – and the debt is one of the major dangers we are facing.\"
