In response to the recent surge in natural disasters triggered by torrential rains, the Ministry of Finance and the Ministry of Emergency Management have allocated 260 million yuan ($36.62 million) to support local governments across several provinces in disaster relief efforts.
The funds will be distributed to east China's Jiangsu Province, east China's Shandong Province, central China's Henan Province, southwest China's Chongqing Municipality, southwest China's Sichuan Province, and northwest China's Shaanxi Province. These resources will aid in critical emergency response activities, including search and rescue operations, the transfer and resettlement of affected individuals, guarding against hidden dangers and secondary disasters, and repairing damaged infrastructure.
Recent heavy rainfall has led to flash flooding, landslides, and mudflows in many regions of China, causing significant disruptions to traffic and forcing widespread evacuations. The peak flood season, spanning from late July to early August, typically brings heavy rainfall and typhoons that cause water levels to rise, threatening communities along rivers, near lakes, and on coastlines.
Forecasts indicate that all seven major river basins in China are at risk of experiencing flooding during this period. Additionally, typhoons are expected to move north into inland regions, increasing the frequency of intense and extreme weather events.
Tragically, a highway bridge collapse in Shaanxi Province on Friday evening, triggered by torrential rains, resulted in 12 fatalities and left 31 people missing. In Sichuan, more than 30 individuals remain missing after flash floods struck a village in Ya'an City early Saturday morning, according to local authorities.
The allocated funds aim to bolster the ongoing disaster relief efforts, ensuring that affected communities receive the necessary support to recover and rebuild after these devastating events.
