China Hosts Side Meeting to Clarify Trade Policies Ahead of WTO Review

In a significant move ahead of the World Trade Organization's (WTO) ninth trade policy review on China, a side meeting was convened in Geneva on Tuesday. The event aimed to provide a comprehensive understanding of China's economic and trade policies to WTO members.

Experts and scholars from China, alongside representatives from foreign-funded businesses operating in the country, showcased the policies and measures China has adopted. They also shared practical experiences that have driven high-quality development and opened up markets, emphasizing China's commitment to economic growth and globalization.

The meeting fostered a dynamic exchange of views among more than 100 participants, including WTO secretariat members, representatives from WTO member countries and regions, international organizations, and media personnel. Addressing the concerns raised by WTO members regarding China's macroeconomic stability and domestic reform initiatives, the experts presented detailed analyses of China's economic performance and future outlook.

Highlights of the discussion included China's new measures to develop \"new quality productive forces,\" the creation of a unified national market, and the promotion of the private economy. These initiatives are part of China's broader strategy to enhance economic resilience and foster sustainable growth.

Li Chenggang, China's permanent representative to the WTO, underscored the importance of trade policy reviews not only as a mechanism for WTO to oversee trade policies and ensure transparency but also as a platform for building mutual understanding and trust among members. \"This side event marks the first time China has organized such an event on the eve of a trade policy review,\" Chenggang noted.

Echoing this sentiment, Alexander Keck, chief of Global Economic Analysis at WTO, praised China's proactive and transparent approach in preparing for the review. He acknowledged that the event played a crucial role in deepening the WTO's understanding of China's economic and trade policies, thereby increasing trust and alleviating doubts within the organization.

The ninth trade policy review of China is scheduled to take place from July 17 to July 19, providing an opportunity for comprehensive evaluation and discussion of China's role in the global trade landscape.
