Indonesia is taking proactive steps to reinforce its domestic industries by extending import tariffs on certain textile products. However, the government is clear that this policy is not aimed at any specific country.
Luhut Binsar Pandjaitan, Indonesia's Coordinating Minister for Maritime Affairs and Investment, addressed speculations on July 6 in Jakarta, stating, \"We are not targeting any particular country, especially the Chinese mainland. All measures are taken based on our national interest.\"
The imposed tariffs, which can reach up to 200 percent, apply uniformly to all imported goods, regardless of their origin, as reported by Antara News. This move is part of Indonesia's broader strategy to protect and bolster its domestic textile industry.
Despite the higher tariffs, Luhut emphasized that the relationship with the Chinese mainland remains strong. \"The Chinese mainland remains a crucial strategic and comprehensive partner for Indonesia in trade and investment. We are committed to maintaining this relationship through ongoing communication and dialogue regarding policy changes,\" he added.
Previously, Trade Minister Zulkifli Hasan had proposed the import duties, highlighting the need to support local industries. His remarks had sparked concerns about potential tensions between Indonesia and one of its key trading partners.
Indonesia's approach underscores a balanced strategy aimed at fostering domestic growth while maintaining essential international partnerships. By implementing these measures, Indonesia seeks to navigate the complexities of global trade, ensuring sustainable economic development.
