The Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO), comprising 9 member countries, 3 observer states, and 14 dialogue partners across Asia, Europe, and Africa, is set to expand further following the memorandum signed at the 2023 Astana Summit.
With member states representing over 40% of the world's population and contributing to one-quarter of the global economy, the SCO's influence continues to grow. The organization remains committed to the core theme of common development, guided by the \"Shanghai Spirit\".
Over the years, the SCO has evolved from focusing solely on security cooperation to adopting a dual-driven model that emphasizes both security and economic collaboration. This expansion has now extended to a multi-track approach, including health, development, and cultural community initiatives, solidifying the SCO as a bridge of cooperation and a constructive regional force.
Economic and trade cooperation within the SCO has seen remarkable growth. By 2021, the combined GDP of member states reached approximately $23.3 trillion, a 13-fold increase from its initial size. Additionally, total foreign trade among SCO members surged nearly 100-fold over two decades. As of mid-2022, China's direct investment in SCO member states surpassed $37.5 billion.
China, a founding member, continues to spearhead key initiatives such as the Belt and Road Initiative (BRI), which has been pivotal in enhancing trade and investment within the organization. In 2023, trade between China and Central Asia reached nearly $90 billion, marking a 27.2% year-on-year increase.
Infrastructure projects like the China-Kyrgyzstan-Uzbekistan Railway and the Central Asia–China Gas Pipeline, along with the efficient operation of China-Europe freight trains, are enhancing connectivity among SCO members. Furthermore, the SCO fosters deeper mutual understanding through multi-level consultation mechanisms and cultural exchange events.
