In a significant move towards enhancing China's open economy, the nation's top political advisory body convened virtually on Friday to discuss the pivotal roles of Hong Kong and Macao. Led by Wang Huning, a key member of the Standing Committee of the Political Bureau of the CPC Central Committee and chairman of the CPPCC National Committee, the session emphasized the integration of these regions into China’s new economic frameworks.
Wang highlighted the necessity of focused research on how Hong Kong and Macao can contribute to developing higher-standard economic systems. He called for targeted policy recommendations to effectively implement national strategies that support the growth of these regions.
Twelve members of the CPPCC National Committee participated from various locations, including Beijing, Fujian, Hong Kong, and Macao, via video link. Their discussions centered on enhancing economic coordination across Guangdong, Hong Kong, and Macao to streamline the flow of people, goods, capital, and data, thereby boosting market integration.
Key recommendations from the meeting included reinforcing Hong Kong's position as an international financial, shipping, and trade hub. Additionally, leveraging Macao's strengths as a bridge for cooperation with Portuguese-speaking countries was proposed, alongside expanding seamless international connections.
The session also featured input from officials of relevant departments, who provided insights and engaged in meaningful discussions with the political advisors. Such consultation sessions are a regular practice of the CPPCC National Committee, fulfilling its role in political consultation, democratic oversight, and participation in state affairs.
