Chinese Premier Li Qiang visited Perth on Tuesday to explore opportunities for strengthening China and Australia’s collaboration in the new energy sector. During his visit, Premier Li met with leaders from Tianqi Lithium Kwinana Pty Ltd and Fortescue Metals Group (FMG), including Fortescue Future Industries (FFI).
Premier Li emphasized the potential for building competitive industrial and supply chains in new energy, leveraging China’s expertise in new energy vehicles and lithium batteries alongside Australia’s rich supply of lithium and other critical minerals. This collaboration aims to support low-carbon development in both nations and contribute to the global green transition.
At Fortescue Future Industries, Premier Li toured innovative projects, including hydrogen-powered haul trucks, liquid hydrogen mobile refuelers, and cell electric locomotives. He commended Fortescue’s commitment to transforming into a green energy and resources company, aligning with China’s dedication to developing sustainable industries.
In discussions with Western Australia Premier Roger Cook, Premier Li highlighted the complementary nature of the two economies and the potential for expanded cooperation across various sectors such as energy, mineral resources, agriculture, green industries, and technological innovation. Both leaders expressed optimism about deepening ties and fostering a favorable business environment for continued collaboration.
Premier Li concluded that China remains committed to promoting high-level opening-up, expanding market access, and creating an internationalized business environment to encourage Australian investment and strengthen bilateral relations.
