2024 marks the 10th anniversary of the comprehensive strategic partnership between China and New Zealand. Over the past decade, the two nations have developed innovative mechanisms for cooperation and models for mutual benefits, achieving remarkable results that have effectively benefited their people.
Steady and Pragmatic Political Cooperation
Since establishing diplomatic relations in 1972, China and New Zealand have enjoyed smooth and progressive bilateral relations. Mutual trust has deepened, and practical cooperation has continually expanded. Leaders from both countries have made frequent visits and engaged in in-depth discussions to strengthen ties.
In 1999, China and New Zealand agreed to establish a long-term and stable relationship aimed at healthy development into the 21st century. This relationship was elevated to a comprehensive strategic partnership in 2014, reflecting the growing depth and breadth of their cooperation.
In June 2023, then New Zealand Prime Minister Chris Hipkins led a delegation to China. During this visit, both sides agreed to enhance high-level exchanges, deepen cooperation, improve mutual understanding, and manage differences effectively as they approach the 50th anniversary of diplomatic relations.
As the comprehensive strategic partnership enters its second decade, China and New Zealand are committed to making high-level exchanges even steadier and more pragmatic. This ongoing collaboration will continue to provide strategic guidance for the healthy development of their bilateral relations.
