During the 29th meeting of the China-Spain Joint Economic and Industrial Cooperation Committee in Madrid, China's Minister of Commerce Wang Wentao criticized Europe’s anti-subsidy investigation into Chinese electric vehicles (EVs). Wang described the EU's actions as typical trade protectionism, arguing that Europe’s claim of \"excessive industrial capacity\" is actually rooted in excessive anxiety rather than genuine overcapacity.
Wang emphasized that accusations of market distortion against China stem from a \"distorted mentality\" and called for addressing these concerns through dialogue and communication. He co-chaired the meeting with Spanish Minister for Economy, Commerce and Business Carlos Cuerpo, where both leaders exchanged views on promoting high-quality development in bilateral economic and trade relations.
The discussions also covered the EU’s anti-subsidy measures on Chinese EVs, facilitating bilateral personnel exchanges, government procurement, and improving market access for agricultural and food products. Wang outlined China's commitment to enhancing trade with Spain, promoting two-way investments, and strengthening cooperation among small and medium-sized enterprises for mutually beneficial outcomes.
Wang expressed hope that Spain would advocate for a rational and open approach within the EU towards the green and new-energy industries. In response, Minister Cuerpo reaffirmed Spain’s dedication to deepening the strategic partnership with China, maintaining ongoing dialogue and cooperation, and exploring new opportunities in sectors such as automobiles, renewable energy, industrial machine tools, and medical equipment.
