Tesla Breaks Ground on Shanghai Mega Battery Factory for Global Energy Storage

In a significant move towards expanding its global footprint, U.S. carmaker Tesla has commenced construction of a state-of-the-art mega battery factory in Shanghai. This groundbreaking project marks Tesla's first factory outside the United States and its second in Shanghai, following the Gigafactory established in 2019.

The new Shanghai facility is dedicated to producing Tesla's Megapack energy storage batteries, which play a crucial role in stabilizing power grids and preventing outages. Slated for mass production in the first quarter of 2025, the factory aims to produce 10,000 Megapack units annually, equivalent to nearly 40 gigawatt hours of energy storage.

Spanning approximately 200,000 square meters, the factory represents a substantial investment of around 1.45 billion yuan (about $203.94 million). Vice President Tao Lin highlighted the project's significance, stating, \"I believe the new plant is a milestone for both Shanghai and Tesla. In a more open environment, we can create a new Tesla speed at the Megapack factory, and supply the global market with large-scale energy-storage batteries manufactured in China.\"

The establishment of this mega factory is expected to catalyze the growth of an industrial cluster centered around energy storage in the Lin-gang Special Area. Lu Yu, an official of the Lin-gang Special Area Administration, remarked, \"With Tesla's benchmark project, we anticipate that within the next three to five years, an industrial cluster centered around energy storage will rapidly emerge.\"

This development not only underscores Tesla's commitment to advancing sustainable energy solutions but also highlights Shanghai's role as a pivotal hub for technological innovation and economic growth in the region.
