China Pushes Back Against U.S. Section 301 Probe on Maritime & Shipbuilding

In a recent escalation of trade tensions, China has expressed strong opposition to the United States' Section 301 investigation targeting its maritime, logistics, and shipbuilding sectors. The Chinese Commerce Ministry released a statement on Wednesday, condemning the U.S. move as unfounded and laden with false accusations.

The ministry spokesperson criticized the U.S. petition for misinterpreting standard trade and investment activities as threats to national security and corporate interests. According to China, these claims lack factual basis and contradict common economic principles.

Highlighting the strength of its industrial sector, China emphasized that its advancements are driven by technological innovation and vigorous market competition. The statement also pointed out the U.S.'s contradictory stance, noting that the U.S. has historically provided substantial subsidies to its own industries, which has arguably led to a decline in the competitiveness of its shipbuilding sector.

China further referenced the World Trade Organization (WTO), asserting that previous Section 301 investigations by the U.S. violated WTO rules. These actions, China argues, were opposed by numerous WTO members, undermining the principles of a rules-based multilateral trading system.

Urging the U.S. to respect international trade laws and cease what it calls "erroneous practices," China has vowed to closely monitor the ongoing investigation. The ministry assured that it will take all necessary measures to protect its rights and interests in response to the U.S. actions.
