At the Eighth China-U.S.-EU Trilateral Summit on Consumer Product Safety in Hangzhou, the Chinese mainland, the United States, and the European Union made significant strides in strengthening cooperation to ensure the safety of consumer products worldwide.
According to the General Administration of Customs (GAC), the three parties reached a new consensus focused on building common standards, improving supervision, and prioritizing consumer rights and safety. This collaboration aims to protect the overall safety of consumer products across all regions involved.
The summit, co-hosted by the GAC, the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Committee, and the Directorate-General for Justice and Consumers of the European Commission, emphasized the importance of joint action. The parties agreed to leverage existing cooperation frameworks, seek international standards, pool regulatory efforts, and enhance the sharing of risk information to better protect consumer health and safety.
Looking ahead, the Chinese mainland, the U.S., and the EU plan to bolster project cooperation, facilitate exchanges, host seminars and professional training, and strengthen information communication and technical consultation. These initiatives aim to maintain continuous high-level exchanges and ensure the sustained success of the trilateral cooperation framework.
The trilateral cooperation, established 16 years ago, has already achieved positive outcomes. In 2023, China's consumer product trade with the U.S. reached 1.8 trillion yuan (over $250 billion), while trade with the EU stood at 1.79 trillion yuan, highlighting the significance of this collaborative effort.
