China has initiated an anti-dumping investigation into brandy imports from the European Union (EU), addressing concerns raised by the domestic brandy industry. Minister of Commerce Wang Wentao emphasized that the probe does not target any specific EU member state and will be conducted transparently in line with Chinese law and World Trade Organization (WTO) regulations.
The investigation, which began in January 2024 following a request from the China Alcoholic Drinks Association, focuses on EU-produced brandy in containers holding less than 200 liters imported between October 1, 2022, and September 30, 2023. The probe is expected to conclude by January 5, 2025, though it may be extended by six months under special circumstances.
During a meeting in Paris, Wang met with three French brandy trade associations and five producers who expressed their willingness to cooperate with the Chinese authorities. They are committed to continuing their business growth in the Chinese market despite the ongoing investigation.
Highlighting the significance of 2024 as the 60th anniversary of diplomatic relations between China and France, Minister Wang stressed the vast potential of the Chinese market and the country's designation of 2024 as the year of promoting consumption. This initiative is set to increase demand for high-quality imported products, presenting ample opportunities for French companies.
Wang encouraged French businesses to actively engage in the Chinese market, sharing in the nationโs development prospects and fostering stable economic and trade relations between the two countries.
