China and U.S. Emphasize Strengthening Economic and Trade Relations

In a significant step towards enhancing bilateral relations, China and the United States underscored the pivotal role of economic and trade ties in stabilizing their interactions. Chinese Vice Commerce Minister Wang Shouwen highlighted the necessity of these ties during the first vice-ministerial meeting of the China-U.S. commerce and trade working group, co-chaired with U.S. Deputy Secretary of Commerce Marisa Lago.

Wang, who also serves as China's international trade representative, visited the U.S. from April 2 to 5 at the invitation of the U.S. side. He expressed China's willingness to strengthen communication, expand cooperation, and manage differences through the working group, aiming to foster a conducive environment for trade and investment between corporations of both nations.

Addressing concerns, Wang pointed out issues related to the U.S. Section 301 tariff measures on China, sanctions on Chinese enterprises, investment restrictions, revisions of trade remedy investigation rules, and what he termed as unfair treatment of Chinese companies.

Both China and the U.S. agreed to maintain close communication with their respective enterprises to address mutual concerns. They also committed to supporting trade promotion events such as the China International Import Expo, China International Fair for Investment and Trade, and the China-California Business Forum.

The discussions further extended to collaboration in fields like clean energy technology and women's health, reflecting a shared interest in sustainable and socially responsible initiatives.

Looking ahead, Lago is set to lead a delegation to China in the latter half of 2024, upon invitation, and will co-chair the second vice-ministerial meeting of the China-U.S. commerce and trade working group.
