Wilhelm Brauner, chairman of the Austrian Chamber of Commerce Hong Kong and Macao, shared his extensive experience and insights on conducting business in the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region in a recent interview with CGTN.
Since arriving in Hong Kong in 1996, Brauner transitioned from an assistant trade commissioner to a key figure in the private sector. He emphasized Hong Kong's appeal as an ideal business hub, highlighting its simplicity and efficiency in setting up businesses, alongside a strong adherence to the rule of law.
Brauner praised Hong Kong's straightforward tax system and the minimal bureaucratic hurdles for entrepreneurs, contrasting these advantages with more complex European systems. Additionally, he commended the city's customer-oriented public services, which contribute to a conducive business environment.
Addressing perceptions shaped by European media, Brauner noted that the reality of Hong Kong often surpasses expectations. Post-pandemic visitors have frequently found the city unchanged, effectively countering any negative preconceptions.
On the topic of safety, Brauner regards Hong Kong as one of the safest cities globally, supported by a robust legal framework underpinned by the Basic Law. Despite past unrest, he affirmed that the city has returned to its customary law and order, reinforcing its stability.
Highlighting the significance of small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) to both the Hong Kong and Austrian economies, Brauner stressed the importance of safety and predictability for business operations.
Looking ahead, Brauner acknowledged the global economic challenges in the post-COVID-19 era but expressed strong confidence in Hong Kong's resilience and potential. He pointed to the development plans of the Greater Bay Area as a key factor positioning Hong Kong for a prosperous future.
