China Challenges US NEV Subsidies at WTO for Fair Competition

China has officially filed a complaint with the World Trade Organization (WTO), challenging the United States' subsidies for new-energy vehicles (NEVs) under its Inflation Reduction Act (IRA).

The complaint, announced on Tuesday by China's Ministry of Commerce, aims to protect the interests of Chinese NEV enterprises and ensure fair competition within the global NEV industry.

According to the ministry, the U.S. has implemented discriminatory subsidy policies that exclude products from China and other WTO members. These policies, China argues, distort fair competition, disrupt global NEV supply chains, and violate WTO rules, including national treatment and most-favored-nation treatment principles.

\"China firmly opposes the discriminatory act,\" the statement read.

Emphasizing its commitment to a rules-based multilateral trading system, China respects the legitimate rights of WTO members to implement industrial subsidies that comply with WTO regulations and promote economic and social development.

China urges the United States to adhere to WTO rules, respect the evolving global NEV industry, promptly rectify its discriminatory policies, and maintain the stability of the global NEV industry and supply chains.
