Malawi’s President: China’s BRI Catalyst for Economic Transformation

Since establishing diplomatic relations in 2007, China and Malawi have experienced rapid and robust development through fruitful cooperation across various sectors. In March 2022, Malawi took a significant step forward by signing a memorandum of understanding with China under the Belt and Road Initiative (BRI), embarking on a new chapter of collaboration.

During his visit to Changsha City in Hunan Province, Malawian President Lazarus Chakwera was interviewed by CGTN host Zheng Junfeng. President Chakwera emphasized that the BRI serves as a 'catalyst' for Malawi's aspirations, aiming to transform the country from a land-locked nation to a land-linked economy. This transformation is expected to enhance connectivity, boost trade, and drive sustainable economic growth.

The partnership under the BRI is set to bring significant advancements in infrastructure, trade relations, and overall economic development in Malawi. By leveraging China's expertise and investment, Malawi aims to integrate more deeply into the global economy, fostering a prosperous and connected future for its citizens.
