China Pledges Stronger WTO Support at Abu Dhabi Ministerial Conference

In a significant move at the 13th Ministerial Conference of the World Trade Organization (WTO) in Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates, Chinese Commerce Minister Wang Wentao met with WTO Director-General Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala on Sunday.

During their discussion, Wang emphasized China’s unwavering commitment to the WTO, highlighting the nation’s active participation in ongoing WTO reforms. He underscored China's dedication to enhancing the WTO’s role in global economic governance, aiming to create a more resilient and inclusive international trade environment.

Wang expressed China’s willingness to collaborate with all member parties to drive the conference towards achieving concrete outcomes. Key areas of focus include resuming the normal operation of the WTO’s dispute settlement mechanism, developing a comprehensive work plan for agricultural negotiations, and addressing the food security needs of the least developed countries.

WTO Director-General Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala lauded China for its steadfast support of the WTO and the multilateral trading system. She appreciated China’s approach to considering the perspectives of all WTO members while protecting its own legitimate rights and interests. Okonjo-Iweala also expressed optimism that China would play an even more pivotal role in ensuring the success of the 13th Ministerial Conference.

This meeting highlights the collaborative efforts between China and the WTO to navigate the complexities of global trade, aiming to foster a more stable and equitable international market.
