Zong Qinghou: Legacy of China’s Beverage Mogul

Zong Qinghou, the visionary founder of Hangzhou Wahaha Group, passed away on Sunday at the age of 79. Born in December 1945 in Hangzhou, Zhejiang Province, Zong was celebrated as a landmark figure in Chinese business history.

Yang Yiqing, curator of the Zhejiang Merchants Museum, praised Zong as a model of Chinese civilian entrepreneurship, highlighting his pragmatic spirit and dedication. Zong's journey began at the age of 42 when he transitioned from working on farms and in school-run companies to the business world.

In 1990, Zong launched Wahaha's first healthy drink for children, a product that quickly gained popularity thanks to strategic TV advertising. The success of this product marked the rise of Wahaha as a national powerhouse in the beverage industry, expanding its production lines to include a variety of drinks over the next three decades.

Zong's leadership was tested in the late 2000s during a significant business and legal battle with French partner Danone. Despite the challenges, Wahaha emerged victorious, solidifying its dominance in the Chinese market.

Recognized by Forbes as the richest person in China in 2010, Zong amassed an estimated net worth of $5.9 billion by last year. Known for his frugality, he traveled in economy class and maintained a modest personal lifestyle, earning widespread respect.

Reflecting on his legacy, Zong once remarked, \"Wealth is fundamentally communal – a mere figure reflecting life's value.\" His commitment to contributing to society underscores the impact of his entrepreneurial endeavors.

A memorial service for Zong will be held on Wednesday at Wahaha's offices in Hangzhou. In December 2021, Wahaha announced that Zong Fuli, Zong Qinghou's daughter, was appointed as vice chairman and general manager, ensuring the continuation of his legacy.
