China’s Green Transition: High-Tech Innovations Boost Land Management and Food Security

China's central commission for deepening overall reform of the 20th Communist Party of China (CPC) Central Committee recently held a pivotal meeting focused on land management, green transition, and comprehensive innovation.

Qu Qiang, a research fellow at Beijing Foreign Studies University, emphasized the critical role of efficient land usage in ensuring the country's food security.

Highlighting China's significant contribution to global food supply, he pointed out that the nation feeds approximately 20 percent of the world's population using less than 10 percent of its arable land.

To bolster food security and supply, China is committed to enhancing land usage efficiency and optimizing the allocation of land resources.

The recent meeting also introduced new guidelines for land administration system reform, aiming to promote a comprehensive green transition in China's economic and social development.

Qu highlighted that green transition serves as both a target and a solution for improving land use. He further noted that high-tech advancements are essential in addressing land supply shortages.

China is undergoing an economic structure transition and technological upgrades, steering towards more science-oriented development.

Qu shared his experience visiting factories equipped with 3D printers, where vertical construction methods enhance land usage efficiency compared to traditional horizontal expansion.

On the topic of innovation, Qu emphasized the pivotal role of enterprises in driving progress. He advocated for elevating the role of academic institutions in fundamental and theoretical research and suggested fostering a more market-oriented funding and financial system to support innovation.

These measures collectively aim to ensure a sustainable and efficient future for China's land management and overall development.
