Hainan’s Duty-Free Sales Soar During Spring Festival Travel Boom

Hainan, the island province of China, witnessed a remarkable surge in duty-free shopping during this year's Spring Festival holiday, reflecting the province's thriving tourism sector.

From February 10 to 13, duty-free sales in Hainan reached 1.217 billion yuan (approximately $169 million), according to data from Haikou Customs. A total of 156,000 shoppers indulged in duty-free purchases, with an average spending of 7,802 yuan per person.

The Spring Festival, spanning from February 10 to 17, is the most significant holiday for the Chinese population. While many families reunite in their hometowns, others take the opportunity to travel. Hainan's mild winter climate makes it a top choice for tourists seeking a warm getaway.

The surge in shopping began two weeks prior to the Chinese New Year. Between January 26 and February 9, duty-free sales in Hainan soared to 2.26 billion yuan, marking a 4.9-fold increase compared to the same period last year.
